Garden Team Leader Description (Volunteer)

The mission of the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina is “No One Goes Hungry in Central & Eastern North Carolina.” The Community & Demonstration Garden was established in 2017 at the Raleigh Branch as part of the Food Bank’s renewed focus on nutrition, education, and outreach. The garden is currently used as part of the Food Bank’s health education programming, with the goal of incorporating community-managed plots in the future.

We are looking for a passionate, engaging group of people to lead teams of volunteers at the Food Bank community garden. A Garden Team Leader must love working with people and spending time outside. They should be excited about gardening and someone that we can count on throughout our growing season. If this sounds like you, please consider joining our team!

Positions: Garden Team Leaders
Project: Team Leaders for volunteer groups in the Food Bank garden
Name and Title of Supervisor: Emily Lumpkin, Volunteer Engagement Manager
Desired Qualifications:

  • Enjoys and is successful in working in teams
  • Able to motivate, organize, and lead diverse groups of volunteers
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Physically able to handle lifting, digging, bending, weather extremes, etc.
  •  Dependable – someone who will show up on a regular basis
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn gardening skills
  • Enjoys gardening
  • Willingness to learn garden planning and management software

Certification or License: Must pass background check; must secure transportation to Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina (1924 Capital Blvd., Raleigh NC 27604)
Major Responsibilities:

  • Orient volunteer groups to purpose, rules, and layout of garden
  • Plan for task assignment at volunteer workdays (e.g., planting, thinning,
    harvesting, weeding, mulching, etc.)
  • Train and oversee volunteer groups to accomplish tasks in the garden
  • Document tasks completed in the garden (e.g., measuring harvests,
    recording planting dates, recording beds weeded, etc.)
  • Identify and plan for upcoming garden needs
  • Request technical assistance from Extension Master Gardener℠
    volunteers as needed
  • Regularly communicate with garden steering committee via co-chairs (see
    Leadership Opportunity below)
  • Develop technical garden skills through hands-on experience and ongoing
  • Serve as project leads for special projects in the garden (e.g., Eagle Scout and
    Girl Scout projects)

Times, Days, and Location: Garden workdays are Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina (1924 Capital Blvd., Raleigh, NC 27604); Garden Team Leaders are not expected to attend every garden workday but should anticipate participating in 4-6 workdays per month.
Training Needs and/or Preparation: Attend information session (details forthcoming); attend Garden Team Leader Orientation; ongoing training and professional development will be provided via Master Gardener volunteers or other appropriate sources
Length of Commitment: 6-12 months; longer if desired
