4-H Participates in Good Samaritan Law Video Shoot

The Wake County Drug Overdose Prevention Coalition in partnership with Amazing Studios created a video to bring awareness to the “North Carolina Good Samaritan Law.” Under North Carolina law, you can call 911 for help during a drug overdose.

Several youth members of the 4-H SIP (Sparks In Action) group participated in this PSA that will be distributed by social media all throughout NC. Other SIP members worked behind the scenes, creating the script to ensure a realistic scenario for youth. We are very proud of their efforts and their willingness to advocate and educate others who may not be aware of the GSL. This law saves lives and we are hopeful that our video will too!

Here are some facts about the Good Samaritan Law!

FACT: The victim and the caller are protected from prosecution for the following:

Possession of small amounts of most drugs
Possession of drug paraphernalia
Underage possession or consumption of alcohol
Violating conditions of parole, post-release or probation

FACT: The caller must provide their name to law enforcement or EMS to qualify for the legal protections

FACT: As of January 2016, 52 law enforcement departments in North Carolina carry naloxone to save the lives of overdose victims
