Grass Roots Support VISTA

The Grass Roots VISTA will support a small group of grassroots non-profits with key leverage points to move them into a place of more effective models with greater reach in the community. Organizations addressing root cause issues are integral to the sustainability and long-term success of our community development projects. The VISTA Member will support a select group of these organizations to develop sustainable solutions for their future success. The Grassroots Support VISTA will be based at Wake County Cooperative Extension’s main office in Raleigh and will support several partners with specific projects.

Member Duties: The tasks of this position involve identifying and evaluating the needs of potential partners, crafting work plans, and assembling a portfolio of grassroots organizations for support. Additionally, aiding small food-based entities with website development, marketing strategies, social media utilization, and business planning to enhance public awareness and funding prospects. Another responsibility includes directing the development and execution of pilot initiatives in collaboration with local nonprofits and faith-based groups. The Grass Roots Specialist VISTA will also support partner E Fusion Solutions in grant writing and the creation and promotion of socially beneficial tools for the target population.

Food Access Specialist VISTA

The Food Access Specialist will implement capacity building strategies identified by the 2023 update of the Wake County Food Security Plan and ongoing food security efforts driven by the community to build an equitable and nourishing local food system. The Food Access Specialist will increase access to locally produced foods among low-income, food insecure populations and build the capacity of local community organizations working with low-income individuals and families. Key to the position is enhancing partnerships between farmers markets, food pantries, food banks, community gardens, community-based food sovereignty groups, regional food security networks, and county & municipal government. The VISTA will be based at the Wake County Cooperative Extension Main Office in Raleigh.

Member Duties: The VISTA will contribute to food security efforts through various activities including conducting resource mapping exercises to create outreach materials and raising awareness of available food resources. The member will organize partnership development networking events to foster communication and collaboration among partners, in collaboration with the Capital Area Food Network Coordinating Circle. Researching and applying for grants to ensure sustainable funding for projects. Implementing initiatives to assist community partners in sourcing fresh and culturally appropriate food items, reducing food waste, and enhancing public awareness of food insecurity in Wake County. Additionally, increasing SNAP Outreach in low-income, food-insecure communities, and offering best practices training for partners addressing food insecurity in Wake County, NC.

Food Security Operations Specialist

The VISTA will build the capacity of Kirk of Kildaire by developing and implementing activities with the Western Regional Food Security group, working on the logistics of Kirk’s food hubs, and developing partnerships to increase capacity to serve low-income neighbors, primarily Hispanics. The member will build the capacity of workforce development to increase food security. The Kirk pursues new partnerships to serve their beneficiaries and is limited by organization capacity and tired volunteers, which new partners will alleviate. This assignment has two primary objectives: To enhance the Western Regional Food Security Action group and Kirk of Kildaire’s food hubs, aiming to bolster their ability to conduct food security activities effectively, and to strengthen Kirk of Kildaire’s workforce development initiatives, encompassing tutoring, mentoring, Summer Programs, General Education Development, etc., with the ultimate goal of fostering greater food security within the community.

Member Duties: The VISTA duties encompass a comprehensive range of tasks aimed at enhancing the food pantry’s operations and community impact. This includes creating a volunteer structure to efficiently manage tasks such as pick-up, sorting, and distribution of food, diapers, and personal care products. Members will also play a crucial role in checking food donations and coordinating their distribution. Additionally, they will develop and implement a communication strategy to inform the target population about available community resources. Engaging in workforce development activities forms a key part of their responsibilities, focusing on strengthening food security among participants and the broader community. Members will provide support for Plaza Comunitaria adult education activities by facilitating logistics such as printing materials, reserving rooms, and managing student and volunteer enrollment. Moreover, they will devise strategies to enroll prospective students, addressing obstacles like transportation, childcare, and literacy. Furthermore, members will design an evaluation methodology to enhance the effectiveness of workforce development programs and actively implement initiatives to bolster food security within the participant community. Through these multifaceted duties, members will contribute significantly to the pantry’s mission of fostering food security and community resilience.

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle Community Health Education VISTA

The Community Health Education VISTA will support the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle’s efforts to build stronger community networks and partners, increase overall reach into marginalized and traditionally excluded groups of people and will develop outreach materials and resources to be accessible to a wider range of people.
The purpose of the Community Health Education program is to support community-led initiatives to increase knowledge around health and wellness through a stigma-free and inclusive lens. The Inter-Faith Shuttle does this by offering tailored and unique educational programming (both in English and Spanish) based on the wants and needs of the communities they serve. The VISTA assignment would allow to offer a wider range of specific programming based on community requests. The VISTA will also assist to evaluate the successes of this model which will enable the Food Shuttle to continue conversations with funders about the benefits of community health education to build up enough revenue and work to add in full time staff members.

Member Duties: The VISTA’s responsibilities are designed to enhance the reach, capacity, and efficiency of the Community Health Education (CHE) Department, fostering sustainable and active engagement from community partners. Key tasks involve evaluating current satellite and community partners, identifying barriers they encounter, and updating resources and materials to address their needs. Additionally, establishing frameworks for assessing success will be prioritized. Members will curate a portfolio of lesson plans and educational materials (passive and active) to better cater to community needs and facilitate comprehensive workshops. This entails reviewing existing plans, identifying access gaps, and crafting tailored lesson plans. Furthermore, members will research innovative approaches to address community health needs, analyzing program offerings and conducting SWOT analyses to identify opportunities for improvement and expansion. Through these duties, members will contribute significantly to the CHE Department’s mission of promoting community health and well-being.

Wake Forest Community Table Food Security Specialist

The mission of Wake Forest Community Table is to connect members of the community to the essential resources of food and personal care items and to each other through community gatherings. We seek to transform the systems that necessitate the services the organization provides. The VISTA member’s primary goal will be to continue to build the capacity in the second year of our operating as an independent 501(C)3 after operating for six years with St. John’s Episcopal Church as our fiduciary sponsor. The VISTA member will build capacity by creating systems and procedures that will broaden the organizations volunteer base, connect with and support community partners and gardens more efficiently and increase the number of meals and produce bags that are served each week.

Member Duties: The member’s primary duties are to elevate the reach, capacity, and effectiveness of the Wake Forest Community Table. This involves close collaboration with the Board and leadership/advisory teams to establish the necessary infrastructure for enhanced funding, grants, volunteer engagement, community visibility, and partnerships. Facilitating connections with other organizations and donors is crucial to augmenting the organization’s ability to support those facing food insecurity. Additionally, the member will undertake community education initiatives to illuminate the systemic factors and historical contexts contributing to the need for food distribution programs. Documentation and organization of all research findings, protocols, recommendations, systems, and files related to each objective will be essential for continuity and future reference. Through these multifaceted efforts, the member will play a pivotal role in advancing the mission and impact of Wake Forest Community Table within the community.

Food Security Operations Specialist

The assignment of the Bilingual Health & Nutrition Educator will have two main objectives. The first objective is to devise a system to promote healthy choices (e.g., signage reminders, recipe cards) and provide nutrition education (e.g., cooking classes) to pantry shoppers. This work will be key as Urban Ministries has just reopened the pantry for in-person shopping. The decisions the VISTA makes to implement nutrition promotion/education will lay the foundation for what the organization does going forward, and may be sustained by regular, dedicated volunteers over the next three years. This work will help low-income pantry shoppers make nutritious choices that will support their health over their lifetime and over generations. The second objective of the assignment is to identify all households in the system who may be eligible for SNAP and provide enrollment support to 200, so they may become successfully enrolled in SNAP. The initial identification and “backlog” clearing will allow Urban Ministries to regularly provide SNAP enrollment to the trickle of new pantry visitors via staff or a regular, committed volunteer over the next three years. This work will help many families to gain more reliable and robust access to food via food benefits.

Member Duties: The VISTA member will embark on two primary objectives: Firstly, they will develop, implement, and assess an evidence-based nutrition promotion and health education plan tailored for the client-choice food pantry. This plan aims to enhance the nutritional knowledge and practices of pantry users, fostering healthier lifestyles. Secondly, the VISTA member will identify recent food pantry users who may qualify for SNAP benefits but are not enrolled. They will then engage with these individuals to provide support and guidance through the SNAP enrollment process. Additionally, the member will conduct training sessions for volunteer services staff, equipping them with the skills to identify eligible families within the system and assist with submitting SNAP applications. These staff members will subsequently train reliable volunteers, ensuring sustained support for new households accessing the pantry in the future.
