N.C. Cooperative Extension of Wake County is hosting four (4) free classes for small and/or prospective food farmers, who are looking to start or expand their Fruit Production enterprise, such as niche small fruits (like strawberries) or tree fruits (such as persimmons). It is also appropriate for those using fruits as part of an agritourism enterprise, such as Pick-Your-Own.

This highly anticipated event will take place on January 14, 2025  – February 21, 2025 bringing together farming enthusiasts, industry professionals, and seasoned experts for three days of immersive learning and networking.

There will be series of virtual workshops and interactive sessions covering essential topic.

Workshop Information:

January 14, 2025: Getting Started with Local Food Production

Learn how to start your business in local food production, how the local food system works, and how to find your best niche in the market.

January 21, 2025: Soil Health

The foundation of any farming is the soil! Learn the most practical basics of soil health to maintain the health of what you grow in it. Highly recommended no matter what type of production you hope to get into.

January 28, 2025: Integrated Pest Management

Learn how to take care of pests and diseases using strategies that reduce pest & disease pressure in the first place, and manage eventual problems in the most sustainable way possible. Create a pest management plan for your operation with help from our Extension Agents.

February 4, 2025: Post-Harvest & Putting a Plan to Work

Most problems small producers face are after the crop has been harvested. Learn here how to prepare for different market channels and keep your product at its highest quality. We will also talk through how to implement your business plan for your operation.
