“Enriching the Lives, Land, and Economy for all people in Wake County”

Here to Serve You:

N.C. Cooperative Extension, Wake County Center supports urban agriculture as a vehicle to enrich the agri-economy, build community, and increase food security within urban centers in Wake County. The food system is strongest when all stakeholders have an equal opportunity to gain knowledge, access, and build skills. Therefore, we support our urban agriculture programs through various outreach efforts.

Children and Youth:

We provide hands-on learning opportunities for children and youth (ages 5-18) to build their knowledge about urban agriculture and local food systems. Cooperative Extension develops 4-H Clubs that give youth the opportunity to engage in informal urban agriculture education, including gardening and STEM programs. In addition, N.C. Cooperative Extension in Wake County supports the development of school gardens, project-based learning and experiential learning by connecting schools and teachers with researched-based curriculum. To learn more about the specific training and resources available, contact Esmeralda Rojas.

Community Members:

Cooperative Extension, Wake County Center engages community members through urban agriculture programs, such as Master Gardener℠ volunteers, to enhance their knowledge and agriculture skills. In addition to supporting the development of community gardens, we also provide educational workshops and demonstrations on topics like vegetable gardening, composting, rain gardens, and beneficial insects. To find out more about our educational outreach and the Extension Master Gardener℠ program of Wake County, contact Jeana Myers.

Farmers, Nurseries, and Landscapers:

We equip farmers, nurseries, and landscaping professionals with the knowledge and skills to engage in urban agriculture activities that generate a profit and protect natural resources. Our Extension agents conduct field visits and field demonstrations, as well as provide educational workshops for new or experienced growers. Our urban agriculture program supports a vibrant growing community in addition to a thriving agriculture economy in Wake County by connecting farmers to market opportunities and hosting community events to support local agriculture. Find out what events or opportunities are happening in Wake County!

Accessible Food System:

We want to ensure that the food system in Wake County is accessible to all residents. We support initiatives that increase food security for Wake County residents through programs like Farm-it-Forward, Summer Meal Program, and the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). In addition to these ongoing efforts, we provided leadership in the development of the Wake County Food Security Plan (adopted in 2017) that “outlines recommendations on policy, partnerships, and activities to establish a pathway to comprehensive food security in Wake County.” To find out more in ways to support or participate in programs like these, contact Sydney Klein or Trevor Hyde.

Policy and Community Partnerships:

We educate policymakers and community stakeholders on best practices in food system development so they can make informed decisions on the topic. This process is done best when we can partner with our allies in the food system, such as the Capital Area Food Network. Additionally, we work with community members to enhance the urban agriculture sector in Wake County through programs like incubator farms and urban gardening. Contact N.C. Cooperative Extension in Wake County to find out more ways to partner with us!
